I have great sympathy for Fred Phelps. Allow me to explain.
Phelps (84) was excommunicated from the church he formed in September 2013. He is being kept from any current or past member of Westboro. Also he's dying.
I was apart of the people who anticipated this news in hopes to "picket" his funeral. However, I've had a change of heart in that position. I believe we should show the current members that we are not like them. As well as to give first and final respects to Fred Phelps as the man he was before the church. Respects as a human. We at this time no one knows of what his condition is or how he's dealing with it.
"I've learned that my father, Fred Phelps, Sr., pastor of the "God Hates Fags" Westboro Baptist Church, was ex-communicated from the "church" back in August of 2013. He is now on the edge of death at Midland Hospice house in Topeka, Kansas." - Nathan Phelps
Though we can not know what is the cause the fact he needs to be in hospice care is evidence enough his final days are here if not nearly over.
Current members of WBC seem very passive about Phelps hospice care.
“I can tell you that Fred Phelps is having some health problems,” church spokesman Steve Drain said. “He’s an old man, and old people get health problems.”
Drain however has always been very uncaring about ex-members. Even his daughter -Lauren Drain. In my personal opinion and to my knowledge there is no evidence of this but I have a small feeling that maybe Drain is pleased with Phelps misfortune. Maybe he's trying to gain control of the church. Or maybe he is basking in what they call "god smacks". However these are just my opinions.
Drain has taken over the sermons on their website since September. This adds to the likely hood of his having actually been kicked out of the church. However since they refuse to comment on his membership status we can also assume that the only reason this has happened is because of being near death. Yet I trust ex-memebrs much more than current ones because they are not in fear of saying or doing the wrong thing and being out on their bums. They've already lived that.
I hope that Phelps death is peaceful and that he is at least able to make peace with one of his family members and not be able in death. I wish these things for everyone honestly. No one deserves to die alone. No matter how much of an asshole you were in life.
