How many cars have you seen with the Jesus fish on them and all sorts of religion based designs? Hundreds right? Now how many atheist or agnostic ones have you seen? Not many. But if you're from the state of New Jersey you may just see at least one! If you do it'll be the wonderful David Silverman. This story shows how powerful a little hit of media is.
Silverman, the president of American Atheist, applied for a licence plate reading "Athe1st" since "atheist" had already been taken. He soon received a response saying that the tag was "objectionable".
“‘Atheist’ is not an offensive or objectionable word anymore than the word ‘Jew’ or ‘Christian’ or ‘man’ or ‘woman’ is,” Silverman stated. “It is a common noun, it is in the dictionary and it is not only allowed in multiple other states, the word is used on dog tags for the U.S. government. It is who and what I am.”
The officials called it "clerical error" which is funny seeing that a DMV employee told Silverman themselves that the tag was offensive. Also since an atheist tag had been approved before. (Simply changing the 1 to an i makes thing offensive apparently. Who knew!) No matter the reason for the denial things have been corrected. Silverman is now the proud owner of his "athe1st" plate. Which shows how things magical be come fair once things go to the media and someone is seen as ignorant. Simply magic.
Anyway, from now on on most stories I will have Tea Party Conservative comments on stories. How? I recently got an account on a Tea Party Facebook knock off. So below will be a few regarding this story.
